George Hancock has died. What do you say about George?

We all have our memories, our favorite stories.

I recall the time I needed some new windshield wipers for my car and asked George if he would install them. No problem, he offered. Instead of letting me go to a parts place and buying new ones, George insisted on saving some money. He spent an hour going through a junkyard to find some used one. There was snow on the ground. My feet were cold, wet and I went inside the office to keep from freezing. But George went on until he found the right ones.

He went with us one time to a reception for Gov. Don Sundquist. They only had cookies for snacks when we got there. We kidded George later about having his pockets full of oatmeal cookies. When I went to take a picture of the governor, Mayor Gene Roberts and other officials, George walked up into the background. I made his a picture and printed under it, "George Hancock and friends."

Anytime anyone needed help, mainly car problems, he was always there. Regardless of any ill feelings, he never turned anyone down. Like most of us, he was his own worst enemy at times. He had three Bronze Stars from Vietnam, and was elected commander three times. He was also the perennial candidate, because he loved the post and thought he would make a difference.

After he had lost one election, I wrote in The Flag that he was the kind of person who would give you the shirt off his back, but would make you mad when he did it. He got mad at me. He just didn’t understand.

We worried he wasn't taking care of his health. He wouldn’t listen.

If you could ask him now, "George, why didn’t you take better of yourself and still be with us?" he would say,

"You just don’t understand."
